The Green Machine at the finish in Bamako (her new home!)

The Green Machine at the finish in Bamako (her new home!)

After just a few hours sleep on a floor we sort out our tickets first thing at the Air Maroc office. We now have a “bonus” day in Bamako and spend it at the Mande - a hotel frequented in the past by luminaries including Bobby Charlton and Rob Pearson - eating food and lounging/sleeping by the pool overlooking the fishermen on the Niger river. At last a day that actually feels like a holiday! Another last dinner and goodbye to the Audi, and we go to the airport with Jonny, Chris and Rupert from Boxy/SafariSoGood. They kindly check in with us so that the weight limits are spread and we don’t have problems with all the surfboards. Checking them in is hilarious - quite possibly the first ones to be brought out of Bamako perhaps? They certainly struggled to get them around the little conveyer belt and we got some very odd looks from the staff!

The journey home is a mini epic……..5 hours at Bamako airport, 3 hours to Casablanca, 4 hours at Casablanca airport and finally 3 hours to Heathrow and the snow.

But nearly all the Sahara Surf team are now back…just Tom to come on Saturday. Its both good and a little sad to be back in London - a million miles away from the people and places we left in Africa - and it will probably take a good few days for everything to sink in and readjust.

Its been a heck of a trip, far more challenging and incident packed than any of us could have possibly expected. It has not gone remotely to plan, but partly because of this has been an absolutely amazing and utterly unforgettable experience.

Thanks for following us!
