An Oeuf is Enough
A late start on the drive north. Within 20mins its looking like the water leak/over heating which has been getting worse and worse on the Audi has become critical - we barely make the outskirts of Bamako before the reservoir is dry.
Boxy But Good have a little run-in at a police checkpoint - the police taking a slightly excessive interest in their camcorder. The saga goes on for quite a while as Boxy negotiate the release of their imprisoned Sony. Its looking like we should turn round or go straight to a mechanic……but first we remember once hearing something about eggs sealing water leaks. A little girl is selling eggs so we buy one…..hard boiled…..try again….eventually she comes running back with a fresh one and with about 20 startled friends watches us feed an egg into our water reservoir, explaining in terrible french that the car is hungry. We are not particularly confident but desperate measures are required. Initially we come close to creating a lovely poached egg over the reservoir outlet. Belatedly we realise we should probably stir and add more water…..and proceed to create something resembling a white russian cocktail.
We proceed up the road and amazingly the water warning light remains off. Incredible. In fact it stays off for the rest of the journey and we make Segou. So the egg actually works!
